The export-file process below is now the manual fallback. Use it only when you cannot install the Blog Porter plugin on the WordPress site that will receive your migration.
Before you start
- Create a manual Blog Porter export and download the XML file when it is ready.
- Sign in to the WordPress dashboard where you want the posts to appear.
- Make sure you can install the WordPress importer when prompted. This is separate from installing the Blog Porter plugin.
Import the XML file
- In the WordPress dashboard, go to Tools → Import.
- Find WordPress and select Run Importer. Install it if WordPress asks you to.
- Select Choose File, pick the Blog Porter XML file you downloaded, then select Upload file and import.
- Assign imported posts to an existing WordPress author or create a new author.
- Select Submit to start the import.
Review the result
Open a representative set of posts and check their titles, formatting, dates, categories, tags, featured images, and inline images. Also review your permalink settings and plan redirects before replacing an existing live site.
If you can install plugins on the receiving site, use the Blog Porter plugin instead for future migrations. It imports directly into WordPress in resumable batches and reports progress there.
