Import Your Blog Export in WordPress

Prerequisites

1. You need to have a WordPress site set up (works on both WordPress.com or WordPress.org installations) and accessible to import your blog posts into.
2. You need to have your Blog Porter export file downloaded. If you don't have it yet, you need to export it first.
3. We recommend installing the plugin Auto Upload Images before starting the import.

Step 1: Install the WordPress importer plugin

This is the native WordPress plugin to import the content that you get from the Blog Porter export file.

1. Log in to your WordPress admin dashboard
2. In the Sidebar navigate to Tools → Import
3. Look for the option "WordPress" to install it and activate

Step 2: Install the plugin Auto Upload Images

1. In your WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins → Add New Plugin
2. Search for the plugin "Auto Upload Images" by Ali Irani
3. Install and activate the plugin

Step 3: Import in WordPress

1. In your WordPress dashboard, go to Tools → Import
2. Click on "Run Importer" below the option "WordPress"
3. Click "Choose File" and select your WordPress RSS export file that you downloaded from Blog Porter.
4. Click "Upload file and import"
5. Select the checkbox "Download and import file attachments"
6. Click "Submit". Depending on the size of your blog import, this may take a few minutes.

Are you getting a Timeout error during import?

If your hosting service has limited resources, a timeout error may occur during import. This happens because you are importing your blog posts and downloading images to your WordPress media library all at once. In some servers that can trigger an error so try this instead:

1. Disable the plugin Auto Upload Images
2. Run the WordPress import again with the plugin disabled, but still select "Download and import file attachments"
3. After the posts are imported, enable the plugin Auto Upload Images again
4. Let the plugin run on its own so WordPress downloads the remaining images into your media library in the background.
